| Amersham Hill 2nd XI vs Braywood 2nd XI | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Braywood visited Amersham Hill in an early season table topper, on a damp and overcast day. For a change Oswald won the toss and decided to field. There was one change to the team with the return of Nickel Jathavedan. The new ball was given to Zee Bhatti, who had a mixed first over including a few wides. Carter took the ball at the other end. Both bowlers started to find their rhythm and kept the scoring down, eventually Carter broke through trapping the struggling Gilfoyle LBW for 14. The other opener Hedley soon joined him, retiring hurt after taking a tumble running a quick single. The new Amersham pair started to make some hay in the light rain, despite a hostile, accurate and impressive spell by Hasnad Bhatti, with a couple of edges flying over the slips. Things looked to be slipping for Braywood until a moment of brilliance from Zee Bhatti on the boundary. A Rob McDermott over looked to be ending fruitlessly until the last ball, danger man Rehman hit a straight drive hard in the air and Bhatti ran round to take a superb one handed catch to his right sparking Braywood celebrations. McDermott then continued his fine start to the season by claiming two more wickets with Carter getting another and the impressive Safwan picking up his first 2 wickets of the season. Zee Bhatti also followed up his catch with a wicket caught by Hasnad Bhatti, and Stuart Phillips took a wicket with his first ball. However, opener Hedley returned to the crease to dot out the last few balls and deny Braywood a bowling point. Amersham finished on 216 for 9, a very reachable score on a small ground. Russell and West began Braywood’s run chase; but surprisingly, for the first time this season top run scorer West went cheaply for 2 caught behind to the league’s top wicket taker Mackenzie. Unfortunately this was then followed up by another Mackenzie wicket as Jas Singh departed for 4, leaving Braywood in the precarious position of being 13 for 2. The arrival of Jathavedan; however, brought the stability needed as he and the fluent Russell started to build a strong partnership. This took Braywood to 86 when Russell was bowled on 49, missing out on his maiden 50 of the season. Hasnad Bhatti joined Jathavedan and some good stroke play from both players took Braywood closer to their target. Eventually though, the bowling of De Costa made an impression. Bhatti was bowled for 23, immediately followed next ball by Zee Bhatti, Phillips came in and survived the hat-trick delivery. More rebuilding was needed and Jathavedan and Phillips applied themselves to this task with some sharp running between the wickets as Amersham heads started to drop. Jathavedan hit a 6 and then shortly afterwards reached an impressive 50, but again with things looking promising Amersham struck back in this exciting match. Key man Jathavedan was bowled on 52 by Tucker, followed 2 balls later by Phillips who lobbed a simple catch to Mackenzie whilst on 16. McDermott then followed for a duck and Braywood were grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory. Despite some impressively lusty blows from Safwan who hit a quick fire 25 including two massive sixes, Braywood’s assault on victory faltered as Mackenzie returned to wrap up both Oswald and Carter leaving them 23 runs short of the target on 193 all out. A very disappointing end to an evenly contested game for the mighty 2’s going down to a first defeat of the season, despite another good performance in the field. Still, it’s early days, and everyone is up for making amends in next weekend’s game against Pinkneys Green. Come on the 2’s!!
